Introduction

Our BTEC National Extended Certificate in Sport is an Applied General qualification for post-16 learners who want to continue their education through applied learning and who aim to progress to higher education and to employment in the sport sector. The qualification is equivalent in size to one A Level, and it has been designed as a full two-year programme when studied alongside a further Level 3 qualification.

The BTEC Level 3 in Sport at Broadway Academy further extends students’ understanding within the sports sector. The course is designed to focus on specialist sporting issues, looking to uncover and analyse the key factors to improve and develop sporting performance. During the Course you will study the human body and how it is affected by physical activity, the health and safety factors involved in sports participation, the key principles involved in the coaching process, the fitness requirements and training methods needed for different sports as well as how to create fitness training programmes.

Entry requirements for the course?

  • Five GCSEs at good grades and/or BTEC qualification(s) at Level 2.

Year 12 Curriculum

The course covers four units over two years, with 2 units taught in Year 12.  Learners will study three mandatory units and one optional unit

  • Unit 1: Anatomy and Physiology (Examination Year 12)

Learners explore how the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems function and the fundamentals of the energy systems.

  • Unit 2: Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being (External assessment Year 12)

Learners explore client screening and lifestyle assessment, fitness training methods and fitness programming to support improvements in a client’s health and well-being.

Year 13 Curriculum

Year 13 

The course covers four units over two years, 2 in Year 13.

  • Unit 3: Professional Development in the Sports Industry (Internal assessment)

Learners explore the knowledge and skills required for different career pathways in the sports industry. Learners will take part in, and reflect on, a personal skills audit, career action plan and practical interview assessment activities.

  • Unit 5: Application of Fitness Testing (internal assessment)

Learners gain an understanding of the requirements of fitness testing and learn how to safely conduct a range of fitness tests for different components of fitness

Examination

Assessment opportunities:

2 external examinations (Unit 1 and 2), 2 internal examinations (Unit 3 and 5).
