Attendance at Broadway is very good. We believe strongly in the link between good attendance and doing well at Academy.

We do everything we can to ensure every child on our roll is supported and encouraged to attend regularly so that they can maximise their potential. We have an advanced tracking system for monitoring the attendance of all pupils. Good attendance is suitably rewarded and pupils with attendance issues are highlighted and dealt with at an early stage. In addition to form teachers a whole host of other staff support attendance including an Assistant Headteacher, Attendance Manager, Attendance Assistants. Student Support Managers, Student Support Assistants, Outreach Workers and an Education Social Worker.

There are occasions during the Academic year when the Academy wishes to take photographs or make a video/media recording of your child or children taking part in a academy activity. Occasionally we are asked by the press and media if they can include our students in stories about the academy and programmes including the academy. We also like to display photographs of our students‚ success and work around the school, in brochures and within the school prospectus. Broadway school will ensure that photographs and images of children are taken in such a way as to protect the personal integrity of each child and the ethos of the school. We will always ask for your permission to use their name and to take photographs and or videos for the above purposes via a consent form. In the interest of their welfare, if your child has a serious medical condition it is vital the academy can display copies of your child’s photograph and contact details in staff rooms and certain offices for emergency medical reasons. If you wish us to stop using your child’s image once they have left, please let us know by contacting the academy office in writing.

Homework is compulsory. There is a timetable for all years. Students are issued with a Student Planner. The co-operation and encouragement of parents in checking that the work is done consistently is extremely important. In the first 2 years, homework should occupy no more than 1 hour each evening. In years 9 and 10, 1- 1 ½ hours maximum is recommended.In year 10 this may vary according to the choice of courses for which your child has opted. In year 11 and the 6th form, students should be prepared to devote a large proportion of their spare time to the acquisition of the qualifications necessary for their future career progression.

There is a bike rack at the front of the school. If your child wishes to cycle to school, please ensure they lock their bike securely to the bike rack at the front of the school building. Please note any bicycles left are at the owner’s risk. The school cannot accept responsibility for any loss or damage to the bicycle.

If a student is taken ill or has an accident at academy, it may be necessary to contact the parent/guardian at home or in the work place. Parents/guardians are therefore asked to fill in a form stating the address or telephone number of where they can be contacted during the day and also the contact number of a friend or relative who could be responsible is the main carer is not available.

We have been sensitively teaching Relationships and Sex Education at Broadway for the last thirteen years. The Department for Education has announced some changes to relationships and sex education (RSE). These changes will come into effect from September 2021 and all schools will be required to comply with the updated requirements. This means that we have reviewed our RSE curriculum and policy so we can be sure our RSE provision is appropriate for all our pupils based on their:

• Age
• Physical and emotional maturity
• Religious and cultural backgrounds
• Special educational needs and/or disabilities

We are running an online consultation where materials will be made available for you to read through. Any comments can then be emailed to enquiry@broadway-academy.co.uk before midday on 29th June 2021.

To help you understand the curriculum requirements set by the DfE please read all the documentation which explains what all pupils are expected to know by the end of secondary school. These materials have been on the website since May 2021.

At Broadway Academy we believe that the sense of one’s identity as an individual, and as part of society, is developed throughout the period of the pupils’ Secondary education. Guidance is provided not only from teaching staff but also from a strong student support structure across the school.

There are tutor groups within each year group and each year group has a dedicated Student Support Assistant (SSA) and Student Support Manager (SSM). The SSM is responsible for the personal and academic development of the pupils in his/her care. Form tutors see their pupil groups every day and are best placed to build supportive relationships with the pupils in their care. Broadway Academy’s pastoral structure ensures that the students can learn, and the teachers can teach. We provide a caring, respectful environment in which all students can flourish.

We pride ourselves on being a caring school and value open working partnerships with the parents/carers of our students. We believe that two-way communication is the key to this relationship and encourage the involvement of parents/carers involvement at all the stages of their child’s education.

Our staff are role models and aim to be calm and consistent, building strong relationships with students and parents. They aim to recognise the effort and hard work on a daily basis and create clear routines to maintain an orderly and purposeful climate for learning. Our behaviour philosophy is on a growth mind set approach. A fundamental ingredient in this is challenging both staff and students to continually evaluate their actions in the classroom to continually improve.

The Academy recognises that even when encouraged to make the right choice, some students will occasionally make choices that disrupt their own learning or that of others. In these instances, we adopt a series of strategies to encourage personal evolution and change to behaviours. The aim of these strategies is to encourage students to comply with the Academy rules and re-engage with learning. The Broadway Support Pyramid highlights the range of supportive measure we can put in place.

Expectations regarding students’ school equipment and uniform

At Broadway Academy, we are committed to helping our students achieve the best possible exam results and also to build their self-reliance and independence for later in life. An important element in achieving this is ensuring that all students come to school with the correct equipment and the vast majority succeed in doing this. At a time when you may be considering replacing items of equipment/uniform we want to remind you of the requirements.

Expectations:

• Students bring a suitable bag/rucksack to school daily and take responsibility for their school equipment.
• Students have a properly stocked pencil case and their school planner in each lesson. The pencil case should have at least the minimum equipment, comprising two pens, a pencil, ruler, rubber and sharpener.

Students have the correct uniform (see details below).  Please follow the guidance on what is acceptable uniform and do not purchase “skinny” trousers, “ankle grazers” or any other clothing/footwear that does not fulfil the requirements below. Students will not be allowed to wear non-uniform items which could potentially cause extra expense for you.

Please ensure that your child:

• Has an appropriate school bag for their equipment.
• Develops a routine at home where the bag is packed the night before.
• Has a properly stocked pencil case.
• Wears the correct uniform which follows the Academy’s dress code.

We would like to thank all you for your support in ensuring that your children meet our expectations.

To support the equipment checks, the school will:

• Provide personalised support to students who need it.
• Ensure that form tutors and Student Support Assistants and Managers check that the basic requirements regarding equipment are met every morning.
• Implement sanctions for students who cannot meet this basic requirement for schooling.

Whilst these measures may seem small, they will go a long way to help build students’ self-reliance, responsibility and organisation. They will also promote continued opportunities for you to be actively involved in your child’s learning.
