Dear parents/carers,

I’m sure you’ll be aware that, following recent research by Ofsted, the government has recommended that all schools reconsider their approach to sexism and sexual harassment. As a default stance, we should act as though it’s happening in our school, even if it’s not being reported.

We understand this is a sensitive issue, and we’ve attached a list of resources to support you and your child as we decide, as a community, how to improve our approach to sexism and sexual harassment. We take safeguarding very seriously and want all pupils to come to school feeling safe, comfortable, accepted, respected and supported. We want to make sure our behaviour policy supports this aim.

We’ve rewritten it to be clearer about:

• What sexual harassment and sexism mean and why neither are acceptable
• Our process for responding to reported incidents
• How, while we have a zero-tolerance approach to the behaviour, our responses to it will be supportive, proportionate and decided on a case-by-case basis.
• Sanctions we might use
• How the policy underpins a culture and ethos of respect, tolerance, acceptance and diversity at our school
• How we want to encourage everyone to act, no matter how small the incident
• Support we’ll offer to any victims and alleged perpetrators
• How it will work alongside our relationships and sex education (RSE) curriculum to ensure pupils can put into practice what we’re teaching them about being healthy and safe in school, in their personal relationships and in the wider world

We’d like your feedback on the proposed amendments to the policy. We’d like to invite everyone to take part, even if you don’t have any concerns or your child has not been involved in any incidents of this behaviour. Getting everyone’s views will help us build a safer and more inclusive culture.

We’ll also be getting views from staff, to make sure they’re well equipped to help us put our policy in place and support your children.
We’d like to invite you to a focus group where you’ll be able to:

• Give feedback on each proposed change to our policy
• Suggest additional changes to the policy
• Indicate any proposed changes you think we should discard

If you’d like to come to a focus group:

The focus group will be on Tuesday 30th November at 4.30pm.

If you’d like to participate, please email the school confirming your attendance at enquiry@broadway-academy.co.uk and put “Parent behaviour policy consultation” in the subject heading.

The focus group meeting should take no more than [1 hour].  If you express an interest in the focus group, we’ll send you the changes we’d like to make to our behaviour policy so you can think about them ahead of time.

We’d love you to come along with suggestions, and you’ll be able to share your opinions with us.
However, we’d like to emphasise that these will be informal and that nobody will be put on the spot to voice their opinions in front of others.
