Letter to Year 11 Parents and Carers

25th November 2016

Dear Parent/Carer

Preparing for Success: Ramadan and Your Child’s Studies

As you may be aware, your child’s exams in year 11 will fall during the Holy month of Ramadan. The school would like all of our students to perform to the best of their ability in exams this summer, and balancing exam success with Ramadan is something that we are putting a great deal of thought into.

As such, we are pleased to announce that on Friday 2nd December, Ladywood MP Shabana Mahmood will be a guest speaker at Broadway Academy. She will be speaking with both students and parents about balancing religious life with studies and how to enhance your chances of success. This speech will be delivered to all pupils and parents, providing practical strategies for the year ahead and inspiring the pupils to reach their full potential. She will be sharing some of her own personal stories of success and how she overcame adversity to gain a place at Oxford University and then to become a MP.

It is important that all parents attend this event, as it will enable you to keep up to date with your child’s school life and help them prepare for the crucial time ahead. We ask that all parents arrive at 9:00am on Friday 2nd December for tea, coffee and refreshments. Shortly after, you will be joined by the pupils and enjoy the talk from MP Shabana Mahmood until approximately 10:00am.

We thank you in advance for your attendance and support, and look forward to seeing you there. Both Mr Robbins and Mrs Palmer-Mills will also be on hand after, to answer any questions on your child’s progress, college applications, interventions or anything else you would like to discuss.

On Wednesday 7th December, we have “Positively Mad” Study Skills for pupils and parents.   We have a great day planned for year 11 students to help them study with accelerated learning tools and techniques. The upbeat, interactive study skills sessions are run by the Positively Mad Company and promise to be both informative and entertaining.  These sessions will be run from 2.30pm to 4.30pm for students.

If you would like to support your son or daughter at home they will also deliver a parent twilight session from 5.00pm to 6.00pm. The workshop explains briefly the different types of learning techniques and what the students have learned earlier in the day.  This will provide you with a more holistic approach to supporting your child so you can help implement these techniques when and wherever. The parent sessions are primarily intended for parents of Year 11 but if you are the parent of a pupil in another year group you are also welcome to attend.

Yours faithfully

Mr R Skelton
